If you just bought your iPhone you can start right here, if you have had it you can skip down a little further.
I am going to start at the beginning with all the basics. No need to panic.
The first thing you are going to want to do if you want to get anywhere is take the phone out of the box. Included inside is your new phone (either 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB which I can explain later), a USB (Universal serial bus) cord and charger, headphones with very useful control buttons, an information guide, and a quick start guide.
If you went to your cellular provider and bought your phone they may have started setting it up for you by transferring your contacts from your old phone and any other information. If you did this your phone is most likely already on, it's just sleeping. To wake it up, press the button on the top right. While you're looking at the top already you will also see a headphone jack and a pinhead small microphone on the top left.
If your phone is straight from the box and has never been on, click here for help on setting it up.
If you turn to the left side you will see a switch and two more buttons. The switch (on the top) can toggle your phone between RINGER OFF and RINGER ON. If the switch is pushed back and there is an orange line visible, your phone's ringer is off. This means that when you get a phone call, text message, email, or any other type of notification your phone will vibrate instead of having a tone go off. To turn on the ringer, simply flip the switch forward.
Under the ringer switch are the volume buttons. If you phone's ringer is on you will use these buttons to control the volume of your ringtones and alerts. Use the + to turn the volume up, and the - to turn it down.
TIP: If you are playing a game, watching a video, or using other apps, you will want to turn on your ringer so you can hear sound effects.
Looking at the bottom of the phone you will see the charging port. This is where you will plug in your USB cable to either plug your phone into the charger or your computer to add music, apps, movies, books, and so much more.
Okay, now going back to actually setting your phone up. If you press the Sleep/Wake button (on the top right) your screen will light up. Looking at the bottom of the screen there is a bar with an arrow that says "slide to unlock." Put your finger on the arrow and slide it all the way to the right until you come to another screen. This is called your Home Screen. On it you will see the basic applications that come on the phone. I'll explain them below.
Phone
The phone application allows you to make phone calls (keypad), view your contacts, listen to your voicemails, and see your recent calls.
Safari
This is your web browser. It is the equivalent of Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Google Crome, etc. on your computer. You can visit websites and search the web through this.
Mail
The Mail app is where you can setup your email accounts so your new emails are sent directly to your phone. To learn how to set up your accounts, click here.
Music
Considering you just bought your phone, there won't be any music on it but once you add some songs, this will be a very popular application on your phone. Depending on what size phone you purchased (8GB, 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB) you can fit anywhere from 2,700-21,000 songs. To lean how to use iTunes and add music, click here.
Camera
The camera is another very popular application. Here you can take pictures and videos with just the touch of a button. For more on the camera, visit this page.
Photos and Videos
This is simply where all the pictures or videos you take will show up. If you save images from Safari, e-mails, or messages they will also be saved here.
Messages
From the messages app, you can send text messages to other people. To compose a new message click on the button in the top right corner (it looks like a piece of paper and a pencil). You can then either type the persons number or name. To add more than one recipient, click the blue "+" and repeat. Next go down and tap the blank message field, and start typing. Once you are done, simply tap "send."
Calendar
The calendar application is pretty self-explanatory. To add an event, select the day and tap the "+" in the top right corner and edit the information.
The App Store and iTunes
There two apps are where you can download other applications, music, movies, books and so much more.
Reminders
Reminders is very important when you have so many things you need to remember. Click the "+" in the top right to add a new reminder. You can change it to remind you at a certain time or when you get to a specific location. Once you completed that task, simply tap the box to the left and it will add it to your "Completed" list.
Other Miscellaneous
-Calculator
-Notes
-Compass
-Voice Memos
-Weather
-Contacts
